Hefestos Films is a initiative founded by
young director and producer Roy Alvarez. It is aimed to develop
diverse cinematic projects that explore topics such as the
individual and cultural identities and collective memory.
Hefestos is the name in Spanish for the Greek god of fire
Hephaestus, whose approximate Roman equivalent is Vulcan.
He is the god of technology including, blacksmiths, craftsmen,
artisans, sculptors, metallurgy and fire.
Naming this initiative Hefestos came about after successfully
completing in 2005 PIRATAS, Alvarez’s first documentary
film, where he was faced with continuing with the project
with only 2 crewmembers on board, limited time and a small
self-financed budget.
Making a movie then is like forging a piece of metal, the
artisan works on it until it becomes what he wants it to be,
but not without effort, discipline and mastery. For a filmmaker
though, our prime material is reality and what we want it
to become, but the process remains the same: the crystallization
of a vision through creative and constant work.
